Hydraulic structures and CFD

Large infrastructure projects such as bridges, dams or power plants using water for cooling involve hydraulic aspects which need to be addressed carefully. Design and operations have to take both environmental issues and constructability into consideration. Issues range from the management of large dams to the impact on the environment and ecological system of water used for cooling purposes.

We provide expert advice on the design of marine and hydraulic structures such as water intake and outfall structures, flood gates, dams, spillways and marine outfalls. The typical aspects addressed include dispersion of heated water, siltation in intakes and pump systems, air entrainment, re-circulation of heated water, discharge optimization and scour protection. The services focus at providing the detailed understanding of the hydraulic aspects. An understanding which is derived in close collaboration with the client and often leads to a revised and more efficient and economic design.

Our services range from the conceptual phase to optimization of final designs and are based on hydraulic modelling combined with advanced simulation tools such as computational fluid dynamic codes. The ability to combine hydraulic model tests with numerical modelling ensures that designs can be optimised and verified very efficiently.
